The collection contains a later copy by Randall of his famous 1861 verses "My Maryland." The collection also contains poems "The supreme comfort," 1905, and "Lines suggested by the admirable lecture of Prof. Dimitry on the 'Temples and monuments of Greece'," 1855. In a series of 1905 letters to Thomas Baxter Gresham, Randall mentions his health, poverty, unemployed old age and plans to publish a collection of poems. He refers briefly to Bill Nye. In letters to others Randall discusses the Confederate agent Henry Hotze, apologizes for not having the time to contribute to Eugene Lemoine Didier's new magazine, "Southern Society," expresses his desire to attend a 1905 Knights of Columbus convention, and describes his work on the New Orleans morning star, a Catholic newspaper. There is also a photograph, n.d., of Randall.

The Knights of Columbus originated in New Haven, Connecticut in 1882. The group's expansion to Iowa was the result of the efforts of Patrick McArdle, Illinois state deputy director. The first Iowa council was established in Dubuque in May, 1900 followed by council in Davenport in September of the same year.
